LBANK – Outdoor compensation for medium voltage

Active filter, Services, Hybrid filter, Network analysis, Products

Three-phase detuned compensation system for use in modern industrial networks with harmonic loads.

Case study: Central compensation (chemical industry)

The current case study presents the LBANK product. A compact and cost-effective solution for reactive power compensation in industrial medium-voltage grids. This system is suitable for outdoor installation and is transportable.

The outdoor solution

Local conditions

The chemical and pharmaceutical industries are among the largest energy consumers in the manufacturing sector. To survive in international competition, this sector must also rethink its environmental and business strategies.

A key factor here is energy-efficient production and the optimal use of the existing electrical grid infrastructure. Challenges include the inability to adequately dissipate waste heat from the on-site plant and control rooms, and limited space for compensation equipment. An indoor system is therefore not an option. A robust, easy-to-handle solution is required that can withstand both atmospheric conditions and maritime weather influences. Furthermore, relocation should be possible with minimal effort.

Customer problem

  • Inductive reactive power in a network with strong harmonic loads
  • Unfavorable air and climate conditions outdoors
  • Inefficient network utilization
  • High reactive power penalty

Customer requirement

To ensure trouble-free operation and more efficient use of the existing network infrastructure, the following product requirements were defined for the solution concept:

  • Optimal capacitor bank design for large electrical machines to best minimize inductive reactive power in a harmonic-laden network.
  • Outdoor-ready design without forced ventilation systems – low-maintenance construction with natural ventilation, resistant to chemical and maritime air compositions.
  • High mobility – Relocation within the production facility should be quick and easy. The system must be designed to be particularly stable and robust.

Our solution

Simply clever! A simple, robust, and well-thought-out solution concept was the key here. Customer requirements were fully integrated into the layout and design of our plant. The result is a solution concept optimally tailored to the chemical industry:

Detuned capacitor system: 5300 kvar at 6.0 kV / 50 Hz / 1 transport unit / Plug & Play

The solution can be quickly and easily relocated from one production site to another while simultaneously meeting climatic and chemical requirements. The climate concept of this plant is based on convection cooling, requiring no heating in winter and no forced cooling in the summer months.

In keeping with PQ ENGINEERING's 4A concept, the problem was analyzed, the solution was designed and delivered, and after-sales service was provided – all from a single source!
