PQE SVG-C – Static reactive power compensation for office buildings

Reactive power, Products

By using a PQE SVG-C, PQ ENGINEERING was able to demonstrate that optimal reactive power compensation can be achieved using the modern technology of a Static Var Generator (SVG)

High demands on reactive power compensation

Commercial properties such as large office complexes, laboratories, and data centers place high demands on reactive power compensation. Reactive power fluctuates from the inductive to the capacitive range and back throughout the day, while numerous single-phase loads lead to an asymmetric phase load.

By using a PQE SVG-C, PQ ENGINEERING demonstrated that optimal reactive power compensation can be achieved using the modern technology of a Static Var Generator (SVG). The modular cabinet has a rated power of 400 kVar and dynamically compensates for power fluctuations in less than 20 milliseconds. At the same time, load balancing can be activated, achieving a uniform phase load and reduced neutral currents.

All measured values can be queried via the SVG modules' touch display. A comparison of the measurements on the load and grid sides demonstrates the improvements during commissioning:

The asymmetrical phase currents on the load side are evenly regulated to approximately 128 A. The capacitive displacement factor cos φ is improved from 0.84–0.94 to a constant 0.99 inductively.
